A new book to commemorate the Year for Priests

For 8 years, the author of The priest, the image of Christ through centuries of art, Steen Heidemann, traveled around the globe, seeing private collections, visiting museums, and snapping photos of rare never before seen works of art.

The photographs are of historic paintings that depict the Catholic priest in action. These 560 images illustrate the work of famous artists like Raphael and Fra Angelico, the compilation aims to deepen the appreciation of the priesthood.

Cardinals, bishops, priests and even the pope wrote essays that accompany the illustrations.

“I think the common theme you will see in all these paintings is the sacrality of the Catholic priest. You will see this in all movements expressions and gestures and I think that is the main issue as we need to rediscover the sacrality of the Catholic priest.”

In fact, the book which is available in six different languages, was published precisely to commemorate the Year for Priest.

A book made up of 560 images that many hope will serve as inspiration to both priests and artists living in the 21st century.
